The Sky
02:57
|

They said it was a metaphor
To unite the rich and poor
While pinned down on the floor
You just look at the sky
On the 4th of July
They held each other oh so tight
Born then was the little lie
Bombs burst in the sky
You always look at the sky

Don't Let This Define Me
05:11

And with his ear against the door, he could hear the end of their awful shouts
This must mean it’s time to go
Out of the car, into this room made to appear as if he was home
He couldn’t make sense of anything
You see: he felt, even though he was so young, this was his fault
He only wanted to make things right
I wish he’d known his heart was true; he was only doing the best he could
But still this pain stays in his mind
The chemicals, and pathways, it was all too much for him to take
As he gazes at the ceiling
As he drifts to sleep, he dreamed a dream all horrible and approaching
The world has gone and lost its mind
Convenient stores and pharmacies and cell phone towers engulfed in raging flames
Mothers singing this refrain:
“The Nephites climbed out of their homes. The Sons of Laman had been smitten down
And their blood stains this holy ground
And through the storm, a being appeared above all glory I’d ever seen
And he directed this words at me:
‘Serve thy fellow man, forget yourself, give up your cup unto my father;
You’ll get it back once you’ve made it home’”

Red Card
06:23
|
|
||
Slow night at the shop tonight
Wiped down the bar and the line
They cut me at 8:05
This I dread the car ride
“Where is that spark? Gotta find that spark
Where is that spark? Was there ever a spark?”
Delay my arrival time
Drive through to feel my only vice
Use the red card to hide what I’d buy
Losing faith, so I had to lie
“Where is that car? He can’t be very far
Where is that car? Don’t tell him about the bar”
All I have left is hope
I want to make her laugh
But all I can do is hope

American Dance Bands
04:38
|
|||
I once was told anything was right
No laws, no worries; just yourself and nothing else
Though proved convincing, it didn’t mean that much
All that seemed real was the day when I caught a glimpse
Of the fire, of the sound
I watched them closely move across the stage
Their skills, their fury projected on my soul
The lights, the cameras illuminate my walls
How I wish I could be one of them and nothing else
Of the fire, of the sound
Come with me and we’ll confide
American dance bands know our kind
No one will ever question us now
Several years later, I can’t stand thinking back
All that I lived for didn’t feel the same
The dance was nothing but a hoax, an empty dream
Even in photos, America changed its name
Of the fire, of the sound

Step Out
04:23
|
|
||
Get in the car; there’s no time to explain
We need to run from here
The house caught fire while I was still inside
No one else was alive
I never thought I’d step out
And lock the door behind me
Can’t you see? They’ve been plotting this for years
It’s all part of the plan
We don’t have time to go back for our things
They won’t take us alive
I never thought I’d step out
And block the way back to you

Box Fan
04:30
|
|
||
Every now and then it’s so hot in our room
I get up and knock the dust of the box fan
Since it’s only pushing hot air in, I lay awake
Then I think about the years I slept through this alone
And then it comes rushing through my mind:
You haven’t spoken in a week
As if some vow against this ceremony,
You’ve pulled away from me
And I drift off to sleep
Now I wake up to an empty room, no sign of life
All the pictures have been taken down and the tree’s dying out
The box fan’s been running all night, I couldn’t hear a sound
The bed was cold; it was obvious this wasn’t my home
And then it comes flashing before my eyes:
I couldn’t recognize who I see
As if some vow against this ordinance,
You removed any trace of me
So I step out to leave
Nowadays I wake up to a bunk right above me
The house is quiet, just the creaks and moans of it settling
I look up to the window: no box fan at all
I was erased
I cover my face
I lay back and think
I drift off to sleep

Francis Right
04:03
|
|
||
Oh Francis Right, he broke down at the door
He tried so hard to make it on his own
There was some progress, there was some real reward
Until she stepped in and uttered a single word
Oh Francis Right, he broke up at the seams
He threw down his shields and his ideologies
There was some freedom, some sense of true relief
Until he realized she’s still leaning through the door
“Know why you believe”
Oh Francis Right, he broke it off today
He thought he felt whole, he could offer up is life
There was some beauty, a sincere miracle
Until she reminded him he’s not ready to be someone’s someone
Oh Francis Right, you see him contemplate
His name sake is one to complicate
He holds the weight of this dark world on his mind
Until you stepped in and put your arms around him

Joyous (I Know This)
05:57
|
|
||
Many times I’ve tried to write something worthwhile,
A love song if you will
Yet I can’t allow myself to pen any words
What’s one worth today when this world is falling from your god given grace?
Besides, my pain isn’t unique to me alone
Even Ian said: “a love song’s a stance; just make a lack thereof”
I wish I could forget, yet every day reminds me:
Kids are being kicked out of their homes for not fitting the gender their mom and dad prayed for
A man feels the need to grab a woman on the street to feel fulfilled
My lineage would rather see them dying in the street to uphold fear
And people I won’t ever meet make decisions for your body, your holy temple
Better culture, more retention
More examples, less transgressors
More reaction means revelation
Less education, better warfare
Better standards, more stimulation
More division, better content
Less creation, more influence
Less commitment, better partners
No exception: you went and lost her
I know this
